STAND BY ME DORAEMON - CGI MOVIE 2D/3D (2014)
Doraemon no Uta - Satoko Yamano
Anime: Doraemon
Doraemon is the second largest manganime ever (with the cake being taken by Sazae-san) and, despite that in America isn’t that popular, it’s pretty well known here in Spain, but mainly the anime. (Fun fact, in Spain the anime is called Doraemon: The Cosmic Cat, but is often shortened as Doraemon) It’s pretty impressive that this manganime, that follows the adventures of a clumsy kid named Nobita (Noby in the english dub) and the robot cat from the future, Doraemon, who tries to help Nobita so in the future his descendants aren’t poor, has been here since… 1969!
Despite having lots and lots of stories, (for example, the second anime of Doraemon, the most famous, has over 1000 episodes!) with watching a few episodes or reading some stories of the manga, you know how all this manganime goes:
Basically, the plot of every episode/story is that Nobita has a problem, like bad marks, that he can’t impress Shizuka, (Sue in the english dub, who, interestingly, is more tomboyish is said dub) his love interest or that he is being bullied by Suneo (Sneech in the english dub) and Gian, (Big G in the english dub, and Gigante (Giant) in the european spanish dub) two kids of his class that despite mocking Nobita, sometimes they team up with him. Doraemon pulls out a gadget from his magic pocket to help Nobita but the kid usually uses it with questionable purposes and it backfires to him.
It’s a repetitive show, but the stories always manage to have some differences from eachother and are very charming.
Ninja Hattori-kun (Ninja Hattori) follows an eerily similar premise: a kid (named Kenichi) recieves the visit of Kanzo Hattori, a 11 year old ninja from the Ninja Country (it was the name of the european dub, so I don’t know if the english or japanese dub had other, if that’s the case, please tell me!) most known as Hattori (or Hattori kun) that is going to live and protect Kenichi.
Yeah… that’s it. In Doraemon the robot cat helped the kid because he was sent from the future by Nobita’s descendants to help him, but in Ninja Hattori Hattori comes to Kenichi’s house beacuse potatoes.
In subsequent episodes, more characters add to the cast: Shinzo, Hattori’s younger brother, (he basically is like Dorami in Doraemon but he is a main character instead of a secondary one) Shishimaru, the glottonous ninja dog, (the best character of the show imo, and not just for being a ninja dog) Yumeko (she is Shizuka) and Kemumaki the koga ninja and his ninja cat Kagechiyo (they are like Gian and Suneo). The are also more characters, but, for this review, we are gonna center in them and in a secondary character: Koge, the teacher (Just like in Doraemon Nobita has a teacher that tells him off, Kenichi has a teacher in a similar fashion).
Ninja Hattori was remaked in 2013 in collaboration with an hindi studio (Ninja Hattori was somewhat popular in the India) and indeed, the original anime was aired in Spain, just like Doraemon, but never had the same level of popularity of the blue round-faced cat, and many hispanic people have said that, even as kids, they knew that Ninja Hattori was lame compared to Doraemon, and we have to remember that, despite coming before Doraemon, (in 1964) it hasn’t lasted for too much, I mean, obviously I don’t want it to be as long as Doraemon, but, for example, the Hattori Ninja manga lasted just for 2 years!!
How is that possible?
I haven’t read the Ninja Hattori manga and just a few stories of the Doraemon one, so we are gonna center in the anime versions:
If you look closely, the two manganimes have a lot in common, like I’ve said before: for example, Nobita and Kenichi are lookalikes but in a extreme way: Their main difference is that Nobita has round-shaped glasses instead of square-shaped like Kenichi. (And yes, their facial structure isn’t exactly the same, but you have to admit that the two characters have a lot in common)
So… does this mean that Doraemon is just a cheeky copy of a failed manganime??
Not really, because they were both made by the duo Fujiko Fujio!!
Is weird, isn’t it? They basically recycled the idea!
Doraemon had an anime a lot time before than Ninja Hattori, but the first adaptation wasn’t pretty good…
It was at the archiknown second adaptation when the robot cat started to shine in the anime world, and the Hattori Ninja manga was aired in a similar time, hence why the hispanic children I mentioned before watched both shows.
So let’s compare the 2 animes, shall we?
One of the best factors of Doraemon is that the gadgets bring a lot of possibilities to the story:
A door that can make you travel to any place in the world, a time machine, a propeller hat, (the take/bamboo copter, known in the english dub as hopter) a gun that shots comprised air, a jello to talk every language… And those are just a few!
They add a fantastic component to the series, while Ninja Hattori only uses his ninja abilities and cleverness to save the day. Though, I have to praise the writers because some episodes were really clever and they didn’t sticked to the episode formula as much as Doraemon, but… they weren’t as good as Doraemon’s ideas.
The
characters, compared to Doraemon, are really bland, and not just if we compare
them to Doraemon’s, but overall bland and boring. (You see, I wasn’t joking
when I said that Shishimaru was the best character, an, indeed, he is the most
original thing of Ninja Hattori when compared to Doraemon) The best example I
can think of is Yumeko. And before we continue, I want to say: yes, the characters of Doraemon are also simple, but you can understand their motivations, like the ones that are supposed to be likable and dislike the ones that we should dislike. (At least in the majority of episodes: Let’s be honest, a show with over 1000 episodes isn’t gonna have it’s quality all the time…)
She’s the love interest of Kenichi, but she has no personality whatsoever and when Kemumaki always tricks her making her to think that he is a good guy. (But actually, Kemumaki does that to the rest of the characters. We’ll talk about Kemumaki later, because, oh boy, we have a lot to talk about him…)
She is a super clear example of “love interest that is just there because is a love interest”. I don’t get why Kenichi and Kemumaki are in love with her because, she doesn’t has a personality.
But lets take Shizuka from Doraemon. Yes, she is your classical nice, polite and somewhat naïve girl (or tomboyish and brash in the english dub) that serves as a love interest for our main characters, and, just like in Ninja Hattori, the rivals of Nobita also seem to like her. (But… lowkey, actually. Kemumaki wants to be with Yumeko in a romantic way, but in Gian and Suneo’s cases isn’t that strong attraction and they’ve actually fallen in love with other girls in other episodes)
But, she has her personality. Despite being a stereotype, she at least HAS a personality.
Also, she is intelligent, and she tries to help Nobita or correct him when he does something stupid. And she dislikes that Gian and Suneo bully other kids. She also has problems or funny moments, and, despite not being a great character, she functions very well in Doraemon’s format.
Well, okay. As I’ve tell you before we are gonna talk about Kemumaki and the teacher, because they are the thing that made me realize that the show wasn’t more boring than Doraemon, but BAD at certain subjects. And not just worthless subjects, but… well… they fucked up…
But at first, let’s start with the teacher, because he is the least troubled of this Terrible Two. (Or at least, the one I have to say less things)
As other Ninja Hattori characters, Kobe the teacher has his equivalent in Doraemon: (and, no, it isn’t Suneo’s big brother, despite that physically they are very similar except that Kobe wears glasses) Nobita’s teacher.
Nobita’s teacher is stern and serious, but he just wants that his students become succesful adults. And sometimes, he ponders about he did a good decision dedicating to his job. A very good episode of Doraemon is one in which he wonders about this and has to ask his own mother. He doesn’t like tomfoolery of ANY of his students, not just Nobita.
But Kobe,,,, he is always angry with no reason, ONLY scoffs Kenichi and even BEATS him. Not a good teacher…
Kemumaki… oh dear God this character is just so cruel… let me explain:
When we are introduced to this ninja, we see him as a perfect, nice, and even a little bit feminine boy that pisses Kenichi off because he gets all of Yumeko’s attention. (He is like Dekisugi/Dekigusu from Doraemon, a perfect boy who is very intelligent and nice so Nobita is very jealous of him) But then… he offers Kenichi a “massage“ and he is hurting him, because, actually, the perfect boy is discovered to be a ninja whose clan rivalizes with Hattori ans Shinzo’s.
We have to remember, he is a ninja, an ASSASSIN. And he pleasantly clenches Kenichi’s shoulders and, basically, he would be able to break him a bone or KILL him. Kenichi is in pain and begs him to stop. Kobe was walking near the scene and we he comes to check this, Kemumaki tells the teacher with a smile that he was just massaging his good friend Kenichi. The teacher gets mad at Kenichi for “obligate“ Kemumaki to do that. Luckily, Hattori is able to save the day.
But that isn’t even the worst… There’s an episode that amgered and shocked me:
We see that Kemumaki still bullies Kenichi, and the boy with glasses is having nightmares about that. And, when he wakes up, with a very scared face, decides that he isn’t going to school because he is afraid of Kemumaki.
And it sounds like… a real life kid that is being bullied and is very afraid…
It’s not treated in a comedic way and is very serious…
In a Doraemon episode, Doraemon would have seen that Nobita was very afraid and would helped him….
Hattori doesn’t hesitate to ask Kenichi what’s up and tries to “teach him a lesson”.
You’re reading it right, Kenichi is treated like the bad guy in this episode!
And yes, Kemumaki, due to somes circumstances of the episode, recieves punishment, but not because bullying Kenichi, but because that: circumstances of the episode.
Doraemon may not be an excellent show, but it does know how to do one thing: treat when Nobita is bullied in a different way than Hattori Ninja.
Nobita is a very interesting character in the fact that he is very likable and unlikable at the same time.
He is greedy, lazy, stupid, crybaby, short-tempered, stubborn, but at the same time we can see that he actually has a good heart and tries to be better.
When Gian or Suneo want to fight him, sometimes he deserves it ir is portrayed in such a exaggerated way that is actually played more for comedy. Indeed, Doraemon has a lot of over the top things so that makes it comedic.
Also, Gian and Suneo are portayed at the ones who are doing it wrong for beating people or stealing stuff. And they learn the lesson.
Kenichi, by the other hand, is greedy and short-tempered too, but he is a normal kid. He doesn’t deserve it.
The good thing about this is like, since Ninja Hattori was made before Doraemon, that means that the mistakes of the manganime of the small ninja were corrected, not all, but the important ones were.
Honestly the backstory of Marian’s umbrella is gonna be revealed when she pulls it for a battle or smth and its gonna be that suddenly Nobita from Doraemon and Doraemon himself APPEAR on scene and try to “get it back” because Doraemon has a collection of magical umbrellas from the future (at least in the anime) with amazing abilities and surprise surprise one of them can make rain and storms inside it. Shenanigans ensue and then it results that Doraemon’s umbrella is. In other place. Probably causing problems to someone. And Marian’s umbrella is. A regular magical umbrella and that losing the cat’s umbrella was Nobita’s fault like always and this isn’t a backstory for her umbrella and no one here knows about Doraemon but I had to say it.
